Unilever promotes science, reward students with sponsorship

Manufacturing giant Unilever Nigeria Plc has rewarded winners of the 3rd International Association for Dental Research (IADR), competition with the award of sponsorship to two prize winners of the Unilever Hatton partnership Competition which recently held competition in Abuja.Managing Director Unilever Nigeria Mr. Thabo Mabe while presenting sponsorhip awards to winners said Unilever Nigeria is proud to be associated with the landmark event and cherishes its long standing association with the key stakeholders in the dental community within and outside Nigeria. According to him, Unilever has a long history and partnership with the IADR, the Divisional and Hatton competition. Over the years, close to 900 students from around the world have had the opportunity to attend the competition at the global level called the IADR-Unilever Hatton Competition and have had the opportunity to share their research findings with top dental scientists from around the world.The winners, Azodo Clement Chinedu and Nwangi Lizah from university of Benin and university of Nairobi emerged top winners of the competition with reaseach works focused on Oral hygiene practices and gingival health among school children in Cameroon and dental health and oral health seeking behaviour among adults in Kenya respectively.The prize winners emerged out of the fifteen participants at both senior and junior category of the IADR/Unilever Hatton competition will be fully sponsored to attend the next IADR event in Brazil in 2012.The Unilever boss noted that research, science, consumer satisfaction and sustainability are at the heart of everything that the company do to which gives it the opportunity and power to make a difference towards contributing to the state of oral health around the world, stating ''through this competition, we are not only recognizing and awarding world-class dental research; we are investing in the oral health of future generations''.The two prize winners, Azodo and Nwangi were rewarded with a cash prize of US$2400 and would have the unique opportunity to be a part of the huge dental programme at the global stage. The award winners said,' we are already looking forward to the trip and the experience we are likely to get when we get to Rio, Brazil' The IADR conference is the first of its kind in the country according to Professor O. A Fatusi the local organizing committee chairperson who commended Unilever for investing in the competition and the entire programme in the country. The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) was established in 1920 to promote research in all aspect of oral and related sciences, to encourage the development of improved methods for the prevention and treatment of oral and dental diseases and to facilitate cooperation among investors and the communication of research findings and their implications throughout the world.Currently, the IADR represents over 12,500 members, including over 3,000 students from over 90 countries around the world.
