4 of the Most Privacy-Oriented Search Engines

Published by Itnewsafrica on Tue, 28 Jan 2020

Google is not the only privacy-focused search engine these daysthere are new options popping up for consumers all the time. Heres a closer look at a four alternatives:1. StartPageCalling itself 'the world's most private search engine,' StartPage can back that up with the fact that you can use proxy connections so that you don't visit a website yourself. Basically, you'll use a proxy server to enjoy perks like:Websites not knowing your real IP address.Websites not being able to use tracking scripts, or expose you to malicious scripts. Not having to worry about fingerprinting tech too much. And while StartPage does have ads (hey, they have to make money somehow), they are fully untargeted. That means no creepy 'personalized' ads ruining your browsing experience.Plus, the ads you see on StartPage don't get mixed with the real search results you want to see. Also, you won't get any typing suggestions unless you specifically enable that option and you'll still get decent search results since they come straight from Google.2. PeekierPeekier is a relatively new search engine which puts in a decent effort to make sure you enjoy top-notch online privacy while using it.For starters, its Privacy Policy clearly says it doesn't collect any personally identifiable information ' like your browser's User Agent, your IP address, or any unique IDs.Moreover, Peekier only stores your search queries temporarily to help improve its services. They don't keep permanent logs of what you search online. In fact, the search engine doesn't even use cookies. At most, their caching provider might use just a single session cookie as a way to prevent DDoS attacks.Other than that, I really like that Peekier has a clean and modern design. The fact that you get a small preview of each link along with an image is pretty cool since it helps you decide if you want to click on it or not.3. DuckDuckGoDuckDuckGo is a pretty popular alternative to Google ' so much so that Google ended up integrating it into Google Chrome as a default search engine through the latest updates. The search engine works pretty fast, and it doesn't 'dirty up' your search results with spammy ads since even the paid ones are pretty subtle. DuckDuckGo says it doesn't store or share personal info ' even if someone adds affiliate codes to eCommerce websites.4. searXsearX is not as popular as the other search engines on this list, but it's nonetheless a great privacy-oriented option.First of all, it's completely open-source, and it even allows you to run your own instance of it. If you do that, you pretty much guarantee that nobody is keeping logs of what you search for. Also, since it's open-source and run by volunteers, it features zero ads. searX also doesn't offer any search suggestions, and it can proxy searches just like StartPage.Need Help Picking the Right One'It's difficult to say which search engine is the most privacy-friendly out of these onesheres a guide to finding the rightsearch engines that actually respect your privacy.
