Why We Support Restructuring Of APGA, By Ukwa

Published by Guardian on Sat, 22 Oct 2011

Deputy National Chairman (South) of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Onwuka Ukwa, said that the party wants Chief Victor Umeh, to step aside from the position of National Chairman of APGA so that a programme of genuine reconciliation, restructuring and reinvigoration of the party could commence.IN AN interview with The Guardian, the Deputy National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Onwuka Ukwa, alleged that in the past six years, the party, under Chief Victor Umeh's leadership, has never operated any budget, or has it established procedure forcarrying out its activities, since according to him, 'Umeh alone does everything by himself.'He maintained that restructuring and reconciliation wasneeded toexpand thecoast of APGA, adding that the personality and ego trips embarked upon by the leadership made it impossible for the party to acknowledge the contributions of eminent Igbo sons and daughters, like Prince Arthur Ezeand Justice Eze Ozobu, who assisted the party to get registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).Ukwa added: 'We have all been engrossed in the unfortunate syndrome of 'I own the party' and 'I formed the party' that we have not bothered to give credit to Eze, who gave us the initial to start the process of registering the party.'In fact, Umeh was serving as Anambra State Treasurer of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when APGA was registered.'Ukwa explained that since Umeh had allegedly been standing against genuine reconciliation and strengthening of the party in the past eight years, 'it is necessary for him to step aside, so that founding fathers and foundation members of APGA could rejoin the party to position it for future challenges.'Most importantly, APGA must have a leadership that believes in consultation, internal democracy, transparency and accountability. The ability to inspire and the spirit of accommodation are sadly lacking under the present administration.'He stated that political parties are made up of people and not the property of any one man. While hinting that under the envisaged restructuring and reorganisation, all state secretariats shut down would be reopened and the party's officers made functional and properly funded, so as to allow all Nigerians to come into the party. The Deputy National Chairman regretted that APGA stakeholders have never been given the audited account of the party in the last seven years.
