FG sets aside N50bn to tackle unemployment - Wogu

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

AS part of the efforts to tackle unemployment in the country, the Federal Government has set aside N50 billion in 2011 Budget to address the scourge of unemployment nationwide. The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Chukwuemeka Wogu, told workers at the 10th Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Abuja, that the issue of unemployment required a collaborative effort of all state governments irrespective of party affiliation. He noted that President Goodluck Jonathan had also taken bold steps to address the decayed infrastructure which was inherited from the past administrations.I will give you an example; just recently, this administration, through the Ministry of Niger Delta commissioned particular roads that will transverse Edo, Delta and other Niger Delta States. The commissioning and ground-breaking started in Edo State with participation of the State Governor, he said. The minister emphasised that the administration of President Jonathan would not be partial in the distribution of infrastructural development amongst all states in the Federation.Chief Wogu informed the delegates that President Goodluck Jonathan was also working to ensure that the issue of Power supply in the country was given utmost attention. One other area this administration has been able to carry out reforms is in the Power Sector which is on-going and Power Sector Reform will involve everybody including Labour, the minister stated. He stressed that President Jonathan was working hard for the transformation of Nigeria and had demonstrated that through all the various programmes that had been put in place for the upliftment of the general welfare of the Nigerian workers like the increment in salaries and the New National Minimum wage which has just been passed by the National Assembly. The minister noted that this administration, apart from being labour- friendly, has policies that are equally geared towards resuscitating the economy which had gone bad before we came on board.I urge all of you to join this transformation train because this transformation train is what we are advocating and it is tenets of the Presidents Campaign Movement, he said.
