BERBATOV IN MAN U PLEA

Published by Nigerian Compass on Sat, 22 Oct 2011

DIMITAR BERBATOV has pleaded with Sir Alex Ferguson to bring him in from the cold at Manchester United. The Bulgarian striker has become a peripheral figure at Old Trafford following the emergence of Danny Welbeck - and looks set to miss out again in Sunday's derby.Last season s joint leading scorer in the Premier League is not even guaranteed a place on the bench for the title clash with City, havingslipped down the pecking order at United. The 30.75m club record signing has become a forgotten man, making only one league appearance this term - and ended up playing centre-back in the Carling Cup tie against Leeds this month. But Berbatov remains convinced he still has a future with the Premier League champions and is desperate for Ferguson to put his faith in him."I want to get more chances because I know I can help the team," said the 30-year-old who scored 20 goals last season. I'll continue to give my best to earn my place in the team."Berbatov at least received a morale boost in Tuesday's Champions League clash with Otelul Galati.A group of Bulgaria supporters made the trip to Bucharest to beg their idol to come out of international retirement.Even if he splits opinion among United fans, he is a legend in his homeland after scoring 48 goals in 79 internationals. The Bulgarian fans made their demonstration despite their hero not even making it onto the pitch in United's2-0win.He said: "I didn't expect such reaction. I would like to thank the fans, it was very pleasant. My teammates wondered what was happening and I had to explain. But I can t play for the national team if I'm not playing for my club."Berbatov is in the final year of his contract following his move from Tottenham in2008.He looked certain to be on his way out of Old Trafford when not even named as a substitute for the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in May.Michael Owen was selected ahead of him, appearing to spell the end of his United career.
