Affiliate unions give NLC 2-week ultimatum To reverse decision on its scribe

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

Barely three weeks after the hosting of its 10th delegate conference in Abuja, crisis seems to be rocking the organised labour in the country, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), as the leadership of the congress has been given a two-week ultimatum to reverse its decision to send its general secretary, John Odah, on an indefinite leave, among other constitutional issues. The ultimatum was handed down to the union by its affiliate members, which included the Non- Academic Staff of Universities (NASU); National Assocation of Academic Technologists (NAATS); National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE); Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ); National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees (NUPTE) among others, at the weekend, while addressing journalists in Lagos on the alleged intrigues and illegalities that transpired in the NLC before, during and after the conference. The affiliate members of the union threatened to seek legal redress to ensure sanity was restored to the congress if it fails to reverse the decision within the stipulated ultimatum.According to the affiliate unions, it would be hypocritical to discover that the congress, which serves as a watchdog and vanguard for the respect for legality, constitutionality and the rule of law, was seen to be doing otherwise, within the administration of its own affairs.President of the Hotels Unions, Success Leke, who spoke on behalf of the unions, brought to the fore irregularities that resulted in injustices at the conference, saying that some portions of the amended constitution of the congress were against its long term interest and labour movement in general. He noted with dismay the unfairness done to the general secretary by the National Administrative Council (NAC) of the NLC by asking him to proceed on his accumulative annual leave indefinitely on health grounds, without a resumption date in a memo signed by the president of the congress.
