PROMISE has a way of changing destiny. For Gbolagade Adekola, chief executive officer of Koluchi Clothing Label, the promise of a future in England led him to the needle and thread business.The Business Administration graduate, who unveiled his label in 1991, ventured into fashion business because his elder brother promised taking him abroad for business.According to him, 'though my mum was into fabric business, it was my brother in England who got me into it.'With the hope of traveling abroad, Adekola enrolled at the Golden Scissors and Supreme Fashion Couture to learn the ropes.While undergoing training in fashion designing, friends tried to discourage him, but he was determined to pursue his dream.'People believed then that tailors could never amount to anything good in life, but my perspective and the level I intended taking the job to made me to forge ahead,' he informed.By the time he graduated in 1989, Adekola discovered he could actually make a living from what he had learnt than going abroad.Though thebeginning was tough, with serious dedication, he overcame the challenge.'There were insufficient machines for us to work with and meet up with demandswhen I started; it was a bit rough, but with perseverance and hardwork I was able to cope,' he recalled.WITH clients across different social status and in different parts of the world, Adekola uses all fabrics for his designs to satisfy all. 'We make clothes for all and sundry. We make conventional, traditional and casual wears with local and foreign materials to the best of our clients,' he stated.Speaking on the challenges of the industry, the CEO said, 'inadequate power supply has been the major challenge facingthe industry and we are calling on government do something about it.'For his role models, the designer, points to Dakova and Nobel Afrik. 'They have set the pace for others to follow. Besides, their designs are splendid.'Advising upcoming designers to be focus on their dreams, Adekola says, 'what is worth doing is worth doing well. Though the beginning may be tough, with determination and hardwork, they will surely overcome.
