We Are Set To Punish Environmental Law Breakers ' Aregbesola

GOVERNOR Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State yesterday said his administration is poised to enforce all environmental laws. The Governor said whoever violates the regulations, no matter his position in the society, should be prepared to face the consequences, as his government would not spare anyone caught by law enforcement agents.Declaring closed the period of environmental sanitation emergency at the palace of Akirun, Ikirun in Ifelodun Local Government Area, Aregbesola said, 'From today, we shall strictly enforce environmental regulations and whoever contravenes any of our environmental laws will face the music as such a person will be seriously dealt with.'Henceforth, according to the governor, sanitation exercise will hold every fortnight during which residents are expected to clean their neighbourhood, offices, markets and other work places.'We shall now have two sanitation days in each of the month, which will be very much like the 90-day emergency period,' he said.'Instead of weekly, it will now be fortnightly for as long as we are here as an administration. We have given ourselves enough period to make ourselves amenable to discipline and prepare us for the period we are going into. We are in the period of enforcement now. Encouragement and persuasion ends today.'The governor had on June 8, declared a 90-day emergency period on sanitation in the state in efforts to rid the state of filth. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday had been set aside as markets, offices and neighbourhood sanitation days in that order.However, the emergency period was extended by three weeks, which ended on Saturday.The governor also informed the residents that private public operators are already being engaged to ensure smooth collection and disposal of wastes in the state, while dump sites are already in place to ensure adequate management of collected wastes.Reminding the residents that the emergency period was aimed at preparing them for the period of enforcement, Aregbesola said the time for encouragement and persuasion to imbibe the culture of cleanliness has lapsed.He appealed to the residents to cooperate with the operators in order to achieve healthy environment for the entire state.He also appealed to the residents to remember their attribute as a clean people, adding that nothing must be allowed to let them compromise their culture of sanitation.
