Community leader urges govt to monitor contractors

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

A community leader, Alhaji Salimonu of Sule Street in Mangoro area of Ikeja, has called on the Lagos State governor to always monitor the quality of job being done by the contractors handling state governments contracts. The call, he said, became  necessary because of the rate at which some of the roads and bridges constructed by these contractors were failing.Alhaji Lawal cited the case of the bridge on Sule street which was constructed about a year ago but which has now become a death trap. You see, I believe the state and local governments must be concerned about the quality of jobs being done by contractors. This particular bridge was constructed about a year ago, now it has become a death trap. At least, about three okada riders have fallen into the big hole on the bridge. He explained that the poor quality of jobs being done by those contractors would continue to gulp more money from government as they would always have to spend money on repair. It is very  unfortunate. When they construct a road now, within  six months, you will see potholes on the road. It is not good. Government should set up monitoring committee  made up of civil engineers from the ministry of Works to monitor and supervise the quality of jobs being done.Again, he also suggested that government should blacklist any contractor found wanting in the discharge of his job.I believe there should be checks and balances in the way we do things. Government must have a way of  punishing whoever fails to meet good standard.Meanwhile, Alhaji Lawal called on the state government to repair the failed portion of the bridge before it starts to claim life.
