OBJ ON NIGERIAS UNITY

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

WHILE speaking at the inauguration of the gubernatorial campaign of the chief servant of Niger State, Governor Muazu  Babangida Aliyu, recently, former President Olusegun Obasanjo took a critical look at the 51 years of Nigerias independence and concluded quite lamentably that the unity of Nigeria is fragile.OBJ hinged his conclusion on the disturbing spate of crises resulting in loss of life and property across the country and the tribalisation of the politics of the country by certain Nigerians. Stridently, OBJ declared the very fabric that holds us together is fragile; the issue of unity is still very important; we must not toy with it.IT must have been a painful moment of remorse for a statesman who had spent an ample portion of a lifetime presiding over a crumbling entity. It must also have been a moment of self-flagellation as OBJ had said: Nothing is wrong with Nigeria, what is wrong is with us, the leaders and followers. We must correct it ourselves. OBJ deserves pity and sympathy, no doubt, for seeing all of his altruism vapourising in his presence.BUT then, unity cannot be forged by obvious injustice and certain individuals playing God. It cannot be forged by people who impose their will and foist their proteges on the people. No. OBJ had already taken a diploma in Theology from the National Open University. Maybe he needs another diploma in Unity from some other institutions which offer such a course of study!
