Pandemonium at Abule Oki as cop kills youth leader

Published by Tribune on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

Violence brokeat Abule Oki inIyana Ipaja area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos state recently when a Mobile Policeman allegedly killed a youth leader (name withheld) in the area for claiming staff in a commercial bus operated by the policeman.Community News gathered that youth leader was coming from foothball training season when he boarded the commercial bus. However, problem started when the youth leader wanted to alight from the bus at Iyana Ipaja and refused to pay the N50:00 transport fare, claiming to be a 'staff'. The driver who was a policeman, was annoyed by that statement and an arguement ensued between them. And in the process, the driver allegedly stabbed the youth leader with a dagger and he died before he could be rushed to the hospital. The death of the youth leader led to social unrest in the area, as youths stormmed the scene and beat the policeman to comma.Community News learnt that the deceased was just recruited by the Lagos State Police Command hence, was bold to claim 'staff'.It will be recalled that uniform men in Lagos dont usually pay transport fare as they always claim to be staff.Youth in Abule Oki took to the streets for two days and it took the intervention of a police patrol team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, (Operation), Mr Sobulo, before normalcy could be restored.Meanwhile, a community leader in the area, Alhaji Ash Tajudeen, has blamed failure of the government both at the state and local levels to provide employment for the youths for the unrest.Alhaji Tajudeen lamented that youth could easily be used for violence because they were idle.'We would continue to witness unrest unless there is jobs for the people. Lots of youths are jobless and they are ready made tools for devils. Government must be ready to provide jobs and empower the youths. You see, the unrest that broke out in the area was caused by failure of the victim to pay N50:00 transport fare. If people are empowered, things would change.'Alhaji Tajudeen also implored parents to always warn their children about the danger of taking the law into their hands.
