Etikan community gets new oba

Two years after thedemise of theformer Olikan of Etikan, in Ondo State, Oba Gbadebo Okunfeyiwa, the kingmakers in the town have elected a new Olikan, Prince Adedoyin Oyetakin, to succeed him.Oyetakin, who is from Mafenwa Ruling House, was elected by three out of the four kingmakers, while his opponent, Busayo Oroyo , the current Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Okitipupa branch, had one vote.Speaking after the exercise, the Regent of the town, Elder Shem Moyebola Omoregha, said the selection was conducted under a peaceful atmosphere.He said the head of Mafenwa, Chief Festus Oroyo, in a letter to the kingmakers, a copy of which was sent to the council presented four candidates for the vacant stool.The candidates are: Prince Busayo Adeola Oroyo from Arehin quarters, Prince Festus Egbayelo from Odun quarters; Prince Adedoyin Oyetakin, Majurun quarters; and Prince Numeri Oteje from Iyofa quarters.The kingmakers, Chief Oroale Thopia, Gbogunron of Etikan Kingdom, Chief Akintoye Ayesemitan,the Oliha of Etikan Kingdom, Chief Atibere Iwalewa, the Olorogun 'Ajagbiyara of Etikan Kingdom, in a letter dated October 10, 2011 and addressed to the Chairman of Ilaje Local Government, approved the name of Oyetakin, having scored the majority of the votes cast as the Olikan-elect.The kingmakers affirmed that the selection was in accordance with the 1984 chief's law as amended and the registered declaration guiding the state chieftaincy law.The head of the kingmakers, Chief Oroale Thopia, said the process for the selection a new Olikan commenced in July this year after the four ruling houses Ikumapayi, Ikogun, Mafenwa and Oholu unanimously agreed that Mafenwa should produce the new Olikan based on the rotational system adopted by the ruling houses.The Olikan stool became vacant in January 2010 following the demise of Oba Gbadebo Okunfeyiwa.The council, in a letter with reference number ILG/1043/T/100 and dated October 13, 2011, forwarded the name of Prince Adedoyin Oyetakin to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs as the Olikan-elect for onward ratification.
