Gaddafi's death: Nigerians react

Published by Daily Trust on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

Nigerian's former envoy to Libya, Ambassador Sulaiman Dahiru said yesterday that the era of the slain Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi would be missed forever. The diplomat, who spoke to Daily Trust over Gaddafi's death, last night said the new leaders of Libya must very cautious in their relationship with the western world.'The NTC leaders must be extra-careful with the western world. They should know that the western world didn't get involved in the Libyan crisis because they love the people of Libya. They got involved because of the oil wealth. They shouldn't mistake the NATO's activities in Libya as act of love for the people; it is strictly out of their personal interests,' he said. The diplomat said that the NTC has a lot of work to do, which is centred on reconciliation. 'It is a tough task for the new leaders in Libya. Gaddafi has an army of supporters across the country. It is time for reconciliation not recriminations. It is now time for national reconciliation,' Dahiru said.He said that the Gaddafi's era which was characterised by the deep involvement of his children into the governmental affairs of the country has now become history. 'Those children would never have that opportunity for ever,' he said. The former Libyan envoy warned that Gaddafi's successors must be very cautious not to repeat Gaddafi's mistakes. 'If they refuse to tread cautiously they may end up going against the people of Libya. Gaddafi's mistake may consume if they are not careful,' Ambassador Dahiru said.He said that there is also the need for the current leaders to understand that Libyans are expecting a lot from them. 'It is no secret that there are high expectations from Libyans. If they fail to take the right steps in the right directions, they may end up with civil war or civil disobedience in the country,' he said. Also reacting to the Gaddafi's death, the former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa and leading opposition leader in Nigeria, said yesterday that former Libyan leader knew what will happen to him and he choose to die with dignity. He said that Gaddafi's prediction about Libya, the NATO and the American government had come to past. He therefore urged African and Asian countries to resist re-colonization policies by the Americans and their western collaborators.'May he have perfect rest in his grave. He knew what will happen to him as it happened. When Americans and NATO started invading Libya because of its oil, Gaddafi said there will be civil war in Libya and there was civil war.'He said they will rise from house to house to liberate Libya from foreign forces. Gaddafi and his comrades did exactly so. Gaddafi said he will fight in Libya and will not go into exile and it happened,' the former governor said.According to the former governor, with Gaddafi's murder, Libya will be colonized by Americans and NATO with the support of Arabs kings and other traitors. 'Gaddafi die with hoots and dignity. The people of Africa and Asia should know that the process of re-colonizing the world by America and NATO has began and it must be resisted,' he said.Other Nigerians who reacted to the killing of Gaddafi yesterday condemned the murder, saying it will cause more harm than good to the country. Mr. Adekunle Adebiyi, who spoke to Daily Trust Gaddafi, provided good leadership at the time his country, needed it, adding that it will take Libya over five years to recover.'Gaddafi was a very good leader. Under Gaddafi's leadership, a graduate in Libya without a job is been paid salary until he or she secured a job. The money is paid directly to their account and all the citizens in Libya benefit from the oil revenue of the state. So, why should they kill him' It will cause the country more harm than good,' Adebiyi said. Also speaking to Daily Trust, Shuaibu Abdulhamid said that Gaddafi's killing was not in the interest of the country. He said that Libya will remain stagnant. 'This is a lesson to other countries especially Nigeria. Libya will stagnate for years. If you are carrying a revolution, let it be peaceful. Now, the new leaders will have to start building the country from the scratch. This is because most of the infrastructure in the country is destroyed,' he said.'Nigeria is the leader of Africa and corruption has eaten deep into every sector. If it happens in Libya, a big signal has been send to Nigeria. Our leaders have to be prudent in everything they do. So, this is a lesson to us. The leaders should ensure justice,' Abdulhamid added.
