Engineers plan conference on structural innovation

THE Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE), will this week hold its 24th yearly conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Function Hall, Jogor Centre, by Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State, tagged: 'Oluyole 2011.'Briefing journalists on the forthcoming event on the theme: 'Innovation in Structural Engineering,' NIStructE President, Dr. Victor Oyenuga said the conference would consolidate on the previous achievement.He said that the theme was chosen to underscore the inevitability in life that 'in every facet, there are changes that occur from time to time, which gave credence to the fact that the only thing that is constant in life is change itself.'These changes, according to him, aid in comfort, convenience and efficiency of everyday life activities, noting that structural engineering is continuously endowed by these changes or innovations.The conference's key note address titled: 'The needs for Innovation in Structural Engineering Practice in Nigeria,' will be delivered by a past President of the Association of Consulting Engineers in Nigeria, Mr. Lanre Sagaya, while the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, is expected to deliver a paper on the Federal Government policy on Science and Technology Innovations.A lecturer from Lagos Business School (LBS) is also slated deliver a paper on 'Structural Engineering in the Economic Environment and Relevance of Modern Innovations,' while an academia from University of Lagos, will deliver a paper on the Utilisation of Materials in the Construction Industry.Messrs Julius Berger Nig. Plc will also discuss the current 'Cable-Stayed Bridge' being constructed in Lagos, though many of such bridges had been designed by Nigerian Structural Engineers,' adding that this is the first (a turn key project) that will be built in Nigeria.The conference also incorporated scientific discussions on materials engineering, aesthetics in structural engineering, politics in innovative structural engineering and efficiency in innovation in structural engineering.The chairman of the conference is the president, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), to be supported by eminent personalities including the minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, the governor of Oyo State, the president of COREN, including structural engineers and students and others from all over the country.
