All hail Dokpesi at 60!

THE executive chairman of DAAR Communications Plc, operators of RayPower radio station and Africa Independent Television (AIT), Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi will clock 60 tomorrow. He was born in Ibadan, Oyo State on October 25, 1951. He however hails from Agenebode in Estsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.Although, he trained as a Marine Transport Engineer, his foray into broadcasting with the establishment of the first private radio station ' RayPower 100.5 FM ' in 1994 has continued to give him fame and glory at local, national and international levels.The federal government deregulated broadcasting in 1992 which ushered in the participation of private entrepreneur in the capital intensive broadcasting business, and in less than two decades, Chief Dokpesi's active involvement has revolutionized the sector with several trail blazing results.Today, he is revered for his pioneering efforts, which have given birth to many first including Raypower radio station (1994); AIT (1995); 24-hour radio and television broadcasting; global satellite television broadcasting (1996); cyber technology in television broadcasting; first African station to transmit into and from the United States of America; first Africa television station to broadcast into the Caribbean, the Mediterranean Basin, Asia, etc; first Nigeria television station to transmit into the United Kingdom; introduction of digital technology in television broadcasting; live transmission of major national events from any part of the globe ; and many others.Chief Dokpesi obtained his primary and post-primary education at Ebenezer Africa Church School, Ibadan, Loyola College, Ibadan, and Immaculate Conception College, Benin City. He worked briefly with the Nigerian Ports Authority as Marine Office Cadet in 1969 before proceeding to Poland for further studies. He attended Wyzsza Szokta Morska Gdynia and University of Gdansk Sopot for Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate Degrees.
