Medical lab council gets $5m grant

THE Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has received a $5 million five-year cooperative agreement support from the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for laboratory quality improvement and national accreditation.In a statement by MLSCN and signed by the registrar, Prof. Anthony Emeribe, it was stated that the accord was to provide the financial support for mentoring all tiers of medical laboratories in Nigeria under the U.S.- President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).PEPFAR was a commitment of $15billion and later extended after five years (2003 to 2008) from former U.S. President George Bush to fight global HIV/AIDS.Emeribe, who declined to disclose the exact figures of the financial assistance signed by both parties for the project implementation maintained that: 'Engaging the MLSCN to mentor Nigeria's laboratories towards national accreditation project will contribute immensely towards the goals of PEPFAR'.
