Fayemi condemns Orin killing, wants prosecution of culprits

Published by Guardian on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

WE don't need this in our environment. We need peace and stability. If the citizens are not killing one another, why should the policethat should be protecting us be the ones to be doing it' I know that the leadership of the police is embarrassed by this, but the only way to prove that is to ensure that the full penalty of the law is meted out to them'.With these words at the weekend, Governor Kayode Fayemi condemned the killing of one Miss Tayo Abe (27) in Orin Ekiti last week, calling for immediate prosecution of the policemen who allegedly perpetrated the dastardly act.The late Abe and her four siblings were said to be in their farm at the early hours of Thursday last week, to harvest corn which they intended to sell at the market when suddenly the policemen allegedly opened fire on them, leaving Abe dead instantly while her two other siblings were seriously injured.Four other people were shot at Ido-Ekiti when an angry mob stormed the police station in protest against the attack.Speaking shortly after visiting the family of the deceased at Orin and the casualties at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) at Ido where they were receiving treatment, Governor Fayemi condemned the act, saying it was'unfortunate and horrible'. According to him, it was shocking that law enforcement agents could take laws into their own hands.Fayemi, who said that investigation was still on-going on the heinous act, stressed the need for continuous re-training of policemen on the use ofFirearms. He added that law enforcement agents must abide by the standard procedure on the use of firearms. He said the policemen should have known that the deceased and her siblings were innocent unless the court said otherwise. He urged the law enforcement officers to always use their weapons with 'decorum, restraint and sense of responsibility'.He, however, appealed to the residents not to take laws into their hands whenever they are provoked by men of the Nigeria Police, adding that the attack on the police station was needless, even as he insisted on the arrest and prosecution of the suspects.Fayemi also commiserated with the family of the deceased and assured that the government would not only ensure that justice prevailed but also cater for the family to assuage their pains while the medical bills of the casualties would be taken care of by the government.
