Risk management crucial to infrastructure development, pension 'RIMSON

Published by Punch on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

The Risk and Insurance Managers Society of Nigeria has advised risk managers to demystify and manage the perceived risks in the economy as a viable way of managing pensions. Besides, it said it would help in mobilising funds for critical projects. In a statement on Friday, RIMSON observed that the current macro economic and social conditions were challenging investors and lender appetite for infrastructure projects. The statement quoted the Group President, Marsh & McLennan Companies, Dan Glaser, to have said there was abundant capacity for infrastructure projects. It, however, noted that concerns over the risk landscapes were preventing its full deployment. In view of the development, RIMSON said its upcoming conference, with the theme, Nigeria economic growth, would bring together risk practitioners from different sectors of the economy to review the operating environment and proffer risk solutions. Executive Secretary, RIMSON, Miss Maria Samali, said the body planned to address pressing issues affecting the growth of the economy in the face of another global downturn, as well as the fate of the workers pensions in the present financial crises. She said, "RIMSON will provide a platform to look at the challenges with the view to proffering solutions to issues bearing on pension investment and administration in Nigeria and the way forward for the decaying infrastructure as well as security risks in the nation." Expected at the conference, according to her are risk managers, insurance and investment officers, accountants; auditors, pensions fund administrators, custodians, regulators and resource managers, insurance brokers, loss adjusters, underwriters, consultants, lawyers, regulators, government officials and private sector entrepreneurs; and finally human resource managers.
