Enjoy 3D effects with headsets, sunglasses and more

Published by Punch on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

JAYNE AUGOYE writes that without a 3D television set or laptop, you can still enjoy the beauty of 3D technologyThe3D technology keeps getting better and better with time. Since it got worldwide appeal, following the success of the Hollywood blockbuster 3D movie, Avatar, it has been re-invented to touch different aspects of entertainment industry.Traditionally, 3D glasses present an illusion of three dimensions on a two dimensional surface by providing each eye with different visual information. 3D glasses also create the illusion of three dimensions by filtering out the light not intended for that eye, resulting in each eye receiving a different image. If you thought you could only enjoy this technology by owning a 3D TV, glasses or laptop, you may be surprised to know that scientists have gone a notch higher by producing headsets that come fitted with 3D movies which give the wearer unlimited entertainment on the go. For instance, with the Sony TMZ-HI, the user carries the 3D experience with him/her everywhere he goes. The headset allows him or her to experience the effect of a large, high-contrast OLED screen by sitting two small OLED screens directly in front of the eyes. Alternatively, the 3D glasses can be plugged into any 3D source, such as games consoles and 3D Blu-Ray players. The head-mounted display, SONY says, will take the wearer into a 3D cinema of videos, music and games and is being targeted at people who prefer solitary entertainment rather than sitting in front of a television with family or friends. It is equipped with two 0.7-inch high definition organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels and 5.1 channel dynamic audio headphones. The gadget also enables the wearer to experience cinema-like viewing, equivalent to watching a 750-inch screen from 20 meters away. It manufacturers also say it is not recommended for people below 16 years of age because some experts believe overly stimulating imagery is not good for teenagers whose brains are still developing.Yet, another innovative product is the VFX Converter System. With the device, all you require are its special 3D glasses and then you can enjoy the 3D experience without having to own a special 3D TV or video system. It allows you watch your favorite TV shows and sporting events, your entire collection of VHS and DVD movies, your entire library of home videos and play every video game in 3D, its makers note. The Virtual FX works by receiving an ordinary video signal through a wire from a DVD, VHS Video player, Cable box or Game console. The 2D Video is then converted into a 3D Video signal and sent through a wire to your TV set. However, only a maximum of 10 people can watch it at a timewith each person requiring individual glasses, while sitting directly in front of the television.Information from Apple indicates that they it will soon invest in 3D, after filing a patent application for electronic spectacles that would show films on the move. The head-mounted gadget would also have a slot for an Apple iPhone or iPod.Already nicknamed iSpecs by gadget fans, the device will project the images from the screen so they could be viewed comfortably. They also add that lens would be able to split the image into two different frames creating a 3D effect. The I-3D Video Glasses is another device that can be connected to any standard video source (MP4 players, DVDs, etc). This allows the user to view 3D formatted programming in true stereoscopic 3D. Its other features include a lithium battery/control box, USB charger cable, composite video and audio pig tail, Mini-Stereo, stereo ear bud type speakers, removable immersion visor and remote control.Types of 3D GlassesPassive Polarised glasses look and wear much like sunglasses. Television screens that require this type of 3D glasses will display 3D images at half resolution of a 2D image. Active Shutter Glasses are slightly bulky, since they have batteries and a transmitter that synchs the rapidly moving shutters for each eye with the onscreen display rate. Television sets that use this type of 3D glasses will display 3D at the same resolution as 2D images. Some TV Sets come with one or more pairs of 3D glasses, or may be an accessory that must be purchased separately. Active glasses are more expensive than Passive glasses.
