Plateau plans peace studies, schools' prayer sessions

Published by Punch on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

Chairman of the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs Lyop Mang, has said the board will introduce peace studies and prayer sessions as part of civic education in the states school curriculum. This, she noted, would re-orientate the young minds that had been battered as a result of the frequent violent crisis in the state. She also said the state government had released N500m as part of its counterpart fund for primary education under the Universal Basic Education Scheme. The chairman, who spoke to our correspondent in Jos, on Saturday, added that because of the frequent killings, the minds of the children of the state had been bastardised to the extent that their perception of love for their fellow human beings had been seriously affected.Mang said, If peace is to be preached, it should be all over the country because Nigeria is in crisis. Look at what is happening in Maiduguri and other parts of the North. Jos should not be singled out. A book has just been written by a human rights activist entitled, Children of Jos. It is a good innovation by the writer and its about peace and harmonious existence and if we have been doing our work as role models, we should not have these pockets of crises all over. The issue of peace is paramount if we must make progress as a nation. These young ones represent our future and there is the need to re-orientate their minds towards peace. The prayer sessions will give every child an opportunity to pray in their own language and in whatever religion they profess. With this, they will be able to imbibe the virtue of love because if you love your neighbour, you will learn to live in peace with them. The chairman, who commended Governor Jonah Jang for the timely release of the counterpart funds, said with that, the board had accessed the N1bn available to it under the scheme.e crises-prone areas were being relegated in the execution of UBE projects.
