Port Harcourt tribunal nullifies Senator Sekibo's election

The Senatorial Election Petition tribunal sitting in Port Harcourt has nullified the election of Senator George Thompson Sekibo and called for a rerun within 90 days.Sekibo's counsel, however, vowed to go on to the appeal tribunal to challenge the decision.Senator Sekibo, who contested on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), represents Rivers East senatorial district at the Senate.His victory at the last April senatorial election in the state had been challenged by the Action Alliance (AA) candidate, Michael Chizi Atata, claiming to have been wrongfully excluded from the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which failed to include his name and photograph on ballot papers.Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Veronica Umeh, while reading the judgment, said the annulment had become inevitable due to INEC's refusal to obey an Abuja High Court order, which asked the commission to include the appellant's particulars on the ballot papers.
