Reps vow to expose corruption in banking sector

Published by Tribune on Tue, 25 Oct 2011

The House of Representatives, on Monday, said it would expose corrupt and unethical practices in the nation's banking sector, just as it charged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and commercials banks to wake up to their responsibilities. The chairman, House Committee on Banking and Currency, Honourable Chukwudi Onyereri, who made the declaration during an interactive session with banks' chief executives, said the committee's resolve was sequel to its desire to meet Nigerians' expectations of a financial system that was anchored on a viable, strong, accountable, reliable and transparent banking and currency regime.'We are determined to expose corruption and unethical practices in banks this time; we are keen to encourage genuine bankers to serve our economy, but we shall not look the other way where there are appearances or presentations of unethical and unprofessional conduct,' he said.According to him, "we call on all our banks to resolve to truly serve the interest of the Nigerian economy, to grow the private sector through entrepreneurship, and be ready more than ever before to play by the rules and also to expose corruption in the sector.'The chairman said members of the committee were resolute in meeting the expectations of Nigerians in a financial system that was anchored on a viable, strong, accountable, reliable and transparent banking and currency regime.'Our targets are high, very competitive, and we shall strive to take our economy to greater and enviable heights. You will agree with me that the dynamics of the chains of people's reactions to the pre and post-2008 economic challenges across the globe require a safe and reliable banking sector," he said.Responding to some of the issues raised by the committee, Executive Vice-President of the FirstBank of Nigeria, Dr Yakub Habeeb, said his bank was working in line with the focus of the committee, noting that the issue of fraud and unethical practices had been brought under total control.
