Minimum wage: Okorocha approves N20,000 for Imo workers

Published by Tribune on Tue, 25 Oct 2011

The Imo State governor, Chief RochasOkorocha, on Monday, signed a new minimum wage of N20,000 with the organised labour in the state. The Federal Government had earlier approved N18,000 as new minimum wage payable to workers.Governor Okorocha said he decided to pay N20,000 as minimum wage for the workers, so as to encourage themand uplift the welfare of Imo workers and further motivate them towards living up to expectation in their responsibility to ensure that government's policies and programmes were effectively implemented. He had earlier stated that N18,000 minimum wage approved by the Federal Government was grossly inadequate to be regarded as living wage and, as such, promised to pay above the national minimum wage in Imo State.Apart from the N20,000 minimum wage, Governor Okorocha equally approved the construction of 15km of roads in each of the 27 local government areas of the state, construction of European standard schools in each of the 305 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wards in the state, as well as other ongoing capital projects initiated by his administration. However, no date was fixed for the take-off of the new minimum wage by the Okorocha-led administration, the Nigerian Tribune learnt.Addressing Imo workers at the state secretariat, Governor Okorocha, in addition, promised the workers that abandoned official vehicles would be sold to workers, while low income earners would have houses built for them.
