Members of vigilance group complement police work in Kwara

Towards a more effective policing of communities in Kwara state, men and officers of the State Police Command now work with local vigilance operatives for security of lives and property.Speaking on the development, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Peter Gana, said that the collaborating with the eagle-eyed local vigilance operatives was to complement the operations of the policemen, since they know the nooks and crannies of all the communities in the state.Community News investigations in Ilorin, the state capital, revealed that men of the Police Mobile Force with the local vigilance operatives now conduct stop-and-search exercise on major entrances of the town, apparently to forestall the attack of the dreaded Boko Haram among other forms of insecurity.It was also gathered that the stop-and-search operations usually attracts traffic hold up, many people said it had helped to curb crime and sustain peaceful atmosphere in the state.Mr Gana, who also said that nine criminal suspects were arrested in September alone, added that those arrested include two students of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso, Oyo State who were suspected members of Eye Confraternity, allegedly caught with locally made pistol loaded with a live cartridge.The police boss, who said that the matter was being investigated, added that the alleged arms manufacturer in Ogbomoso, one Ademola Ogundiran, who sold the gun to the suspects, had also been arrested.He also said that two out of four suspected cultists, who invaded Kwara State Polytechnic, Oke Oyi on September 27, and armed with guns to cause pandemonium, had been arrested while trying to escape on a motorcycle.Also arrested were two armed robbery suspects who specialised in snatching bags with motorcycle from unsuspecting bank customers.The police boss said that the suspects confessed to have been invited from Imo state to come and operate in Kwara state by their associates who resided at Offa but had fled when he heard that they had been arrested.
