We have spent three years in darkness

Published by Tribune on Tue, 25 Oct 2011

RESIDENTS of eight communities in Rounder Area, off Ayetoro Road, Abeokuta, Ogun State, who claimed to have been in darkness for over three years, have called on Governor Ibikunle Amosun to help them energise a step-down transformer that has been dropped in the community since August without functioning.Residents of the communities which comprise of: Opara 1, Opara 11, Idiya, Alamala Barracks, Adio-Ajegunle, Asipa-Ijeja, Soyoye, Mile 2 as well as the old Ogun Radio Complex among others, said they had witnessed untold hardship in the last few years as a result of non power supply to the area. They claimed that the new step-down transformer had been there before the commencement of the last Ramadan fasting in early August this year, ''adding Opara I and Opara II communities started experiencing total black-out over three years ago when the transformer in the community donated to them by the then Governor Gbenga Daniel got spoilt five months after its installation. About seven or eight months later, the step-down transformer situated in between the roundabout along Ayetoro, was in flames and it took the state Fire Service men hours to put it off.''The spokesperson for the communities, Chief Olatunji Sule, said the various communities, with the support of Bale of Opara, Chief Kamoru Adebowale and the chairman of Opara Community Landlords Association, Mr Soyinka, had made efforts to solve the problem without any success. The communities, therefore, called on the state governor to use his good offices to help restore power to the affected areas.
