Nigerian players crash in first round, as American teenager shines

IN what look like a performance below what happened in the first leg, Nigerian players yesterday were shown the exit in the ongoing Governor's Cup Lagos Tennis Championship after most of them crashed out of the competition.Nigeria teenage star, Onyeka Mbanu fought hard to make it to the second round, but his efforts were not enough to see him through as he fell to Russia's Alexei Filenkov in a tight game that ended 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2.Most of the Nigerian girls were not spared of the blushes as they were all bundled out in the first round yesterday.Christy Agugbom was beaten; Blessing Anuna was overwhelmed while Romania's Agnes Szatmari 6-0, 6-0, battered Sarah Adegoke.But American teenager, Vickery Sachia sailed through to the second round with a smooth victory over Russia's Margarita Lazareva.The 16-year-old American was merciless against the Russian with the encounter ending 6-1, 6-2 in favour of the Obama girl. She will however face a Herculean task against number four seed, Switzerland's Conny Perrin in the second round after Perrin overcame Serbia's Tamara Curovic of Serbia in 6-2, 7-6(8).In other women's singles matches, India's Poojashree Venkatesha lose to compatriot,Nldhi Chilumula 2-6, 1-6, Russia's Ksenia Lykina beat Italy's Anna Floris 7-5, 6-7, 6-3. Belgium's Tamaryn Hendler defeated Germany's Karolina Nowak 6-2, 6-4.In the men's Singles, tournament number one seed, Slovakia's Kamil Capkovic beat compatriot Marko Danis 6-0, 6-0, while Cote d'Ivoire's Terence Nugent defeated Nigeria's Nonso Madueke 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Croatia's Ante Pavic beat Greece's Paris Gemouchidis 6-2, 6-1; Senegal's Daouda Ndiaye beat Steffen Solomon. 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, India's Vijayant Malik defeated Kaza Vinayak Sharma 6-2, 6-2 while Japan's Yusuke Watanuki beat Zimbabwe's Maek Fynn 6-3, 6-3.Doubles and some first round matches will hold today at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan.
