Baptist youth task govt on Boko Haram

Published by Guardian on Tue, 25 Oct 2011

A YOUTH wing of the Baptist Church in Nigeria, under Gideon Baptist Association, has decried the spate of insecurity in the country, lamenting the leadership's seeming confusion on how to effectively tackle challenges affecting the nation adversely.Speaking at the third quarterly session of the group in Lagos, the moderator of the association, Reverend Israel Olu Kristilere, noted that the nefarious activities of the Boko Haram and other ethnic militias posed economic, social, and political threat to the nation. He advised the government to put every measure in place to 'nip these satanic activities' in the bud.The cleric, who is also the Pastor-in-Charge, Shepherdhill Baptist Church, Obanikoro, Lagos said: 'The endless cycle of killings and reprisal killings in Jos is indeed a shame to our nation. We regret the wanton destruction of lives and properties and hereby plead with sponsors of such nefarious activities to desist from their actions.'On power generation, Kristilere said, 'the recent improvement in power generation is a step in the right direction. Power is a key factor for economic growth that cannot be over-emphasized. While the amount of power generated is improving, what we have is still a far cry from the ideal. Nigerians should shun all acts that can sabotage the efforts of the Federal Government to meet the energy needs of the country.'On Islamic banking, Kristilere observed that the concept of interest-free banking is good but the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has to look into the nomenclature due to the religious diversities of the country. He called on the CBN governor to work out a common interest-free banking system for all and sundry.
