Barewa dazzle in sevens rugby tourney

Published by Punch on Wed, 26 Oct 2011

The Northern Seven-A-Side Rugby Tournament played on Saturday in Kaduna between Barewa Rugby Club of Kano and Police Rugby Union had only two points separating the winners from the losers. The well-drilled Police team had made all the running in the tournament and were expected to gallop home easily against Barewa, spearheaded by Abdulmaliki Salihu. Every time Salihu touched the ball, shivers went down the spines of those whose job it was to mark him. He seemed to score at will and is a great prospect for Nigerian rugby going forward. There was great work done though by the Barewa forwards especially in the line outs where they soared high above the rest and this gave Obi Wilson and his team a great platform to attack from and they took their chances well.Ten club teams from around the country played in two round robin pools before the play-off rounds. Racing Lagos, last years winners, were slightly off the pace possibly due to a crop of new players they paraded. This was the second year the Northern Nigeria Rugby Football Union has held the festival. All the clubs that played last weekend will get another chance to square up against each at the Lagos 7s Festival to be played at Onikan Stadium on November 5 and 6. At that festival teams from Ghana and Senegal are expected to round out the field while a womens game and mini schools tournament is also expected to add to the entertainment on show.
