Published by Punch on Wed, 26 Oct 2011

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested members of three syndicates including a man who claimed to have been teaching the wife of Vice-President Namadi Sambo since 2004, Mohd Alameen.Alameen was arrested on Saturday morning in Tundun Wada area of Kaduna. The syndicates allegedly specialise in duping unsuspecting members of the public large sums of money claiming to be EFCCs officials.Already, four ex-governors, some members of the House of Representatives and a Senator had fallen victims to the syndicates with one of them allegedly losing N3bn to the suspects.Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday where two of the suspects, Alameen and Benue State-born 22-year-old Fidelis Iorongo, were paraded, the Head of Media and Publicity, EFCC, Mr. Femi Babafemi, said there was the need to alert the public to the activities of dubious characters and prevent them from falling victims. He also urged those who had been swindled by the conmen to report their cases to the anti-graft agency.Alameen was said to have approached the Vice-President to link him up with the EFCC Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, to purchase vehicles seized from high-profile suspects.Babafemi said Alameen later called on Waziri in respect of the auctionable vehicles. The EFCC boss was said to have set up an investigation team which trailed and later arrested members of the suspects.Iorongo was alleged to have forged an EFCC identity card to dupe unsuspecting members of the public seeking to be employed by the commission. The suspect, who admitted extorting money from a number of persons, was arrested at the commissions office while negotiating the terms of employment on behalf of the EFCC.Babafemi said, "So far, our operatives have succeeded in bursting three of the syndicates and as a result, some of their leaders have been arrested."One of them who claims he is related to former President (Umaru Musa) Yar Adua and now Vice-President Namadi Sambo goes by the name Mohd Alameen Garba and Mohd Alameen Suleiman."Before his arrest, he had succeeded in obtaining the sum of N50m from one of the accused persons in the pension fraud case being prosecuted by the commission at the moment."
