ANPP predicts hard times for Nigerians

Published by Punch on Wed, 26 Oct 2011

The All Nigerian Peoples Party has said the proposed removal of oil subsidy will make life harder for Nigerians. The Chairman of the party, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said in Abuja on Tuesday that it was unfortunate that President Gooluck Jonathan believed the removal of the subsidy was the best way to pay Nigerians back after supporting him during the April general elections.Onu said it was also sad that Jonathan did not tell Nigerians the kind of treatment he was going to give them when he was campaigning ahead of the presidential election. The former Abia State Governor said many Nigerians would become poorer with the National Electricity Regulatory Commissions decision to increase tariff next year. He said, "We are worried about the intention of the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy by January next year."After a careful assessment of the proposed policy, it is our view that such an action is wrong and if implemented will further worsen the already deteriorating living conditions of the ordinary Nigerian."Removal of fuel subsidy will affect all Nigerians. It will adversely affect the cost of living for all Nigerians as the cost of food items, cost of transport, cost of building materials, cost of labour and many others, will rise sharply. "It should be recalled that the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, had recently announced its plan to make Nigerians pay more for electricity as tariff will be increased in January."It is our view that both actions, which will sharply increase the cost of living for Nigerians, that are intended to take effect at the same time does not portray the Federal Government as being sensitive to the worsening living conditions of Nigerians."
