Police evict Satguru on court order

Published by Punch on Wed, 26 Oct 2011

Policemen on Tuesday besieged House No. 10, Awolowo Avenue, Bodija Estate, Ibadan residence of the self-acclaimed Master of the Universe, Satguru Maharaj ji, and evicted all occupants of the building. The said property, a four bedroom duplex apartment, belonging to the late Prof. Olawale Awosika, was said to have been occupied by Maharaj ji for many years. However, the counsel for the landlord, Mr. Yemi Ajayi, said the arrears of rent between September 1, 2000 to September 1, 2004 running to N800,000, was not paid by the tenant. Ajayi said, "The owner of the property at Number 10, Awolowo Way, Bodija, Ibadan with his family took action against the tenant to eject him. We got a court judgment executed against him to vacate the premises. The religious group suddenly moved in again and his lawyer filed some papers in court that took us five years. "But recently, we got a judgment in court that the eviction be carried out. By this it means that the claimants are in lawful occupation of the property. Anybody who breaks in will do that in contempt of the court." In a judgment on suit number 1/262/2005 at the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan, the court held that the plaintiffs, Prof. Awosika and another Tokunbo Awoyika, suing as administrators of the late Obafemi Awosika alleged that the defendant failed to pay the sum of N800,000 being arrears of rent from September 2000 to September 2004 at the rate of N200,000 per annum. The plaintiffs prayed for order directing the defendant to put back the house in habitable condition by repainting and removing all the symbols, signs and insignia on the walls of the property. In a judgment delivered by Justice E. Esan, the defendant was ordered to vacate the property within three months from the date of judgment on June 1, 2006.
