THE Visitor to theUniversity of Ilorin,President Goodluck Jonathan, has said that Nigeria cannot hope to become and remain one of the world's 20 leading economies by 2020 unless the nation's universities are prepared to lead the way.Speaking on the occasion of the second part of the 27th convocation of the university on Tuesday, the president challenged Nigerian universities to key into the Federal Government's transformation agenda by not only showing returns on investments but positioning themselves for the task of national transformation across the various sectors of the economy.Represented on the occasion by the Minister of Youth Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, Jonathan said it was the primary responsibility of government to provide affordable education at all levels adding that, 'experience has shown that government, no matter its level of commitment and prosperity of its economy, cannot shoulder the burden of funding education alone.'He, therefore, urged universities to leverage on their expertise to develop creative but legitimate strategies to supplement government funding of education.Also speaking, the vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, urged Nigerians, particularly the graduating students to live purposefully, saying that, 'the life of purpose is that which is devoted to the pursuit of the golden rule and the ultimate good, not selfish interest.
