Cricket chiefs meet, ponder games growth in Africa

ALL the chief executive officers of top African cricket playing nations will gather in Johannesburg on Saturday to assess the development of the game in the continent.The forum follows the conclusion of a highly successful CEO's governance workshop in 2010, and according to the ICC-Africa Regional office, the conference has become an annual event to enhance the efficiency and productivity of the administrative functions of its membership within Africa.Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) Chief Operating Officer, George Wiltshire, who will leave Lagos for Johannesburg on Thursday, told The Guardian that the Regional Development Manager has committed to this project in ensuring that all the members are fully equipped with regards to management education, and also ensure they understand the vital role of cricket administration within their countries.Wiltshire believes the second edition of the event would ensure the members' accountability and responsibility 'fall in line with Corporate Governance as we need to ensure Zero Tolerance with regards to Governance.'The 2011 Africa CEO's Conference will run till November 1 with an anticipated 18 delegates from 12 of Africa's member-countries, who have full time staff members overseeing cricket development operations within their respective countries.According to a release from the ICC Regional Office, which Wiltshire made available to The Guardian, this conference is aimed at broadening the knowledge of the administrative personnel within each membership country in Africa, as well as to introduce on-going changes in functions, policies and procedures.'The Conference will be held at the WITS University in Johannesburg and will be pre-dominantly conducted by Professor Kriek, who is the head of corporate governance and leadership study at the University,' the release disclosed.Topics to be discussed at the conference includeunderstanding of the brief, the Leadership Development Centre (LDC),the learning methodology used by the LDC, the objectives of the programme, among others.Other speakers at the conference will include the head of compliance at the ICC-Dubai office, Ammar Sheikh, resource persons from the Africa Regional Office MSCO and the RDM, as well as three renowned professors from the Wits Business School.
