Chukwumerije honours Maputo Taekwondo Team, drums up support for Olympics Qualifiers

TO match words with action, Senator Uche Chukwumerije will today in Abuja fulfill his promise to the victorious taekwondo team to the last All Africa Games in Maputo.The 16-man team captained by Uche Perez Chukwumerije won 10 medals at the games with majority of the athletes participating in their first international competition.Aside honouring the team, the senator will use the occasion to drum support for the team in its quest to secure spots in the 2012 London Olympics when the continental qualifiers hold in January 2012.According to a release by Chukwumerije, taekwondo has been growing by leaps and bounds in Nigeria, being the premier martial arts sports, while its contribution of 10 medals to Nigeria's medal haul in Maputo has reaffirmed its enormous potential.Government functionaries, captains of industries, diplomats and key national leaders have been invited to the dinner to celebrate the improved medal-count of the young team.Chukwumerije added that the event is meant to encourage individuals, corporate bodies and governments to support taekwondo's growth and development within Nigeria, adding that the event would also help to appraise the value and prospects of the sport in Nigeria.Among the 18 sports that Nigeria fielded in Maputo, taekwondo contributed two gold, one silver and seven bronze medals to become the fourth best event behind athletics, table tennis and badminton.
