CBN gov seeks support for Glo1, others

Published by Guardian on Wed, 26 Oct 2011

Demonstrates video conferencing at summitCENTRAL Bank of Nigeria's Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has expressed support for Glo1 and other carriers in the country, stressing that, the Glo1 is a boost to Nigeria's quest of becoming a global economic power.Speaking at the Glo 1 exhibition stand at the just concluded Nigeria Summit 2011 organised by Economist Group in Abuja at the weekend, Sanusi expressed satisfaction over the power behind the Glo1 technology. The telecoms service provider and national carrier, Globacom had demonstrated the potentials of its international submarine cable, Glo 1 to top business and public sector chief executives including the CBN governor at the economic summit.According to Sanusi: 'This is a great development for this country. I am happy that this technology is coming from a Nigerian company with whom we in the CBN also have a good relationship.'Speaking at the event, Head of Glo1's Business Enterprise Solutions, Mr. Folu Aderibigbe, said that Globacom, which was a major sponsor, supported this year's summit because the management of the company believed that Nigeria had the potentials to play on the same level with developed nations.'We simply need to set a direction and then consistently stay on course for a decade or two and then the nation will emerge out of decay to set the pace in the 21st century,' he stated.According to a statement from Globacom, the speakers spent two days to critically examine the government's reform programme, shed light on the realities of operating a business and identify emerging investment opportunities. The statement noted that according to the organisers of the conference, the operating environment for business in Nigeria remained challenging, with wide disparities across states, in terms of the ease of paying taxes, registering property, enforcing contracts, obtaining permits or setting up a business, issues which multinational and local investors need to see remedied by federal and state governments.Other dignitaries who experienced the video conferencing demo at the summit included the Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Development Company, Mr. Chike Onyejekwe, Country Manager of Google, Henrico Liggeri, Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer, Christo Giannopoulos, Area Director (West Africa) of British American Tobacco, Beverly Spencer Obatoyinbo, Managing Director of BHL, Randy Buday and Chief Executive Officer of Glaxo Smithclime, Chidi Okoro among others.
