Atoki elected chairperson of African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights

A MEMBER of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) with links to the Kaduna and Abuja branches, Mrs. Modupe Atoki, was on Monday elected chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. Her tenure as chairperson is tenable for two years and may be renewed once.The African Commission was established in 1987 under Article 30 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (which is domestic law in Nigeria) to promote human rights in Africa and ensure their protection.Mrs. Atoki is the second Nigerian to chair the commission. Professor Oji Umozurike, former dean of Law at the University of Calabar, chaired the commission between 1990 and 1992. She is also the 10th chairperson of the commission.
