Europa League 2014 Results: Group Tables, Final Scores for Matchday 3 Fixtures

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 24 Oct 2014

It was a mixed Matchday 3 for the Europa League on Thursday as the early kick-offs struggled for goals initially, while the evening matchups were flush with a steady stream of scoring throughout. In total, we saw 63 goals bagged as the likes of Tottenham, Borussia Monchengladbach and Besiktas ran rampant against Asteras Tripolis, Apollon and Partizan Belgrade, respectively. The drama was far from stopping there, however, as the tables morphed once again in the search of a place in the round of 32, Europe's second competition showing no lack of excitement with this latest barrage of action.Matchday 3 Key ResultsLille 0-0 EvertonWhile it may have lacked in goalmouth action, Lille and Everton produced a frantic encounter at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy and were left to settle for a point each after failing to score between them.Following Wolfsburg's 4-2 win over Krasnodar earlier on Thursday, there was a chance for either side to distance itself from the Russians at the bottom of the standings, but all affairs ended even in France.Clearly enjoying their time in the European spotlight, the Toffees took more than 5,000 fans to Lille, and Roberto Martinez hailed the support of his team's supporters in his post-match comments, per the official club's website:I have immense pride at seeing what we are as a football club. It amazes me every day, the day-to-day support we receive. Some families came without tickets and just wanted to be near the hotel and wish the players well. You get a better understanding of what the Evertonians deserve every day, and this trip will be an incredible memory for us. It gives everybody at the club more strength to keep progressing and to keep having more nights like this in Europe, because that is what our fans deserve. While the Premier League campaign hasn't gone according to plan this season, the result at Lille will be treated as far more positive for Everton, who remain at the summit of Group H, one point clear of Wolfsburg.Lille sit in third and are two points off the Merseysiders' pace but may be slightly concerned at the lack of attacking potency, having failed to score from any of their 14 shots, Everton having only half that amount.Young Boys 2-0 NapoliNapoli went into Matchday 3 at the top of Group I but suffered a 2-0 loss in Bern that saw them drop down to third place, now level on points with opponents Young Boys. The Swiss hosts held a minority of the possession and fewer than half of the Azzurri's recorded 20 shots on goal, but they made their chances count in the second half as Guillaume Hoarau and Leonardo Bertone paved the way to victory.Travelling fans clearly weren't happy with Napoli's performance either, as David Amoyal of GianlucaDiMarzio.com relays their team bus came under fire:ESPN FC's Julian de Martinis quotes manager Rafa Benitez in asking more of his side, but the Italian writer is tempted not to feel sympathetic toward the Spaniard's plight:Napoli, Young Boys and Sparta Prague now each have six points apiece and head toward the next set of fixtures with the group in very open circumstances. At the start of the campaign, Napoli may well have considered themselves fortunate to be handed such a winnable pool. Now, things aren't quite as certain.Tottenham 5-1 Asteras TripolisWhite Hart Lane played host to a fixture containing a little bit of everything, including a hat-trick, a contender for goal of the season and an early dismissal for Hugo Lloris.Tottenham beat Asteras Tripolis 5-1 in north London to claim their first European win of the season in emphatic fashion, with Harry Kane bagging three and Erik Lamela notching a brace of his own.Bleacher Report UK shows footage of Lamela's Rabona finish that rightly sent Twitter into a frenzy:It was a unique night for Kane, though, who netted his first career hat-trick before also conceding his firstas a goalkeeper, that is.The striker was thrown in between the posts following Lloris' late sending off, Asteras scoring a slightly easy goal not long after.Spurs now sit second in Group C but are level with Besiktas on points, goals scored and goals conceded, making for a very interesting second half to the pool phase. All statistics come courtesy of WhoScored.com.Read more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
