Falcons were unlucky in Cameroun 'Chukwu

Published by Tribune on Thu, 27 Oct 2011

FORMER Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu (MON), has attributed the defeat suffered by the Super Falcons at the hands of the Lionesses of Cameroun last weekend, in a London 2012 Olympics qualifier to ill-luck.Speaking on arrival in Lagos, Chukwu who accompanied the Falcons to Cameroun to provide technical assistance however, blamed the players for being wasteful upfront."Everything was provided for the team by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the girls did their best. At times, there is luck in football and I believe that luck was not our side on the day."The Lionesses didn't have an edge on our team, the only thing was that they utilised the opportunities they had in the match."In fact, we had a lot of opportunities to wrap up the game in the first half but we didn't utilise it. They got their own and utilised it and that is football for you.The Camerounian team was not better than our team," the former coach of Kenya maintained.Chukwu, now a technical consultant to Heartland FC urged the football federation to give women's football in the country a new lease of life."The way forward is to go back to the grassroots and bring out fresh talents. We must ensure that we prepare well to achieve better results in future competitions," he added. It will be recalled that the Super Falcons for the first time lost to the Lionesses of Cameroun 3-4 via penalties after a 3-3 aggregate scoreline to miss the ticket to next year's Olympic Games.
