FEC approves Jonathan's N6bn request for Onne port development

Published by Tribune on Thu, 27 Oct 2011

THE FederalExecutive Council (FEC), on Wednesday, gave an anticipatory approval to President Goodluck Jonathan's request for the award of contract to fast- track the development of phase four of port facilities at Onne Port Complex at the cost of $370,481,720.42 or about N6billion.The contract, which would be implemented under the Ministry of Transport/Nigerian Port Authority, is in favour of Messrs Intels (Nig) Ltd, and has a 40 months completion period.According to the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting presided over by Vice- President Namadi Sambo in Abuja, the construction of Onne Port complex began in the early 80s as one of the strategies of decongesting Lagos and Port Harcourt Ports. He said though the phase three of the port had been completed, the facilities at the port were inadequate to cope with the high demand of the oil and gas industry.Maku, who was flanked by the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris and the Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji, said the project would generate 2,500 job opportunities directly and indirectly during execution while over 20,000 job opportunities would be created when the facilities are in operation.
