Proposed N90bn airports remodelling sparks uproar

As controversyrages over theFederal Government's plan to remodel airports across the country with N90 billion, key players in the aviation sector have demanded that the framework for the proposed remodelling be made public.Addressing a press conference at the Murtala Muhammed Airport on Wednesday, the Managing Director of Belujane Konzult, Chris Azu Aligbe, said up till now, the identities of the contractors, the tenders including the evaluation and the models were yet to be made public.Aligbe further said that rather than continue to deceive the travelling public, government should concession the airports.His words: 'We need to do a critique of what is being remodelled; the plans and details of the upgrade should be made public for debate. Are they doing it to cope with increasing capacity' Unfortunately, this is the only sector that lacks specific reform policy.'Ninety billion naira was reportedly earmarked for the project last year under the immediate past Aviation Minister, Fidelia Njeze who promised to remodel some of the airports within 10 months in 2010.In the same vein, the current Minister, Stella Oduah has also put December 2011 as deadline for the same remodelling.But stakeholders had faulted the planned remodelling which they described as unrealistic and a tall dream.
