Flood: Residents, commuters complain of traffic problems on Ikorodu/Mile 12

Published by Tribune on Thu, 27 Oct 2011

Residents and motorists on the Mile 12-Ikorodu Road have urged the Lagos State government to help control the flood at Ajegunle, which has taken over the highway, resulting in traffic gridlock.A commuter on the road, Mr Badejo Aluko, told newsmen that the flood at Ajegunle was giving road users a lot of concerns, because of the man-hours being wasted in traffic. He said: ``Can you imagine that I left my house at 4:00 a.m., yet I am still stuck in the traffic here at about 6:30 a.m. I have been here for over two hours, trying to manoeuvre my way out of the traffic, but all to no avail.``The government really has to do something about this situation. We need some urgent relief, because last year, we experienced this same problem''.A banker, Mr Wahab Abiodun, lamented that travelling on the road had become a nightmare as motorists and commuters spent several hours on a journey that should normally take just about 20 minutes.'The government should urgently embark on the expansion of the road. It is long overdue. It will reduce the man-hours we spend on the road,'' he said.Another respondent, Mrs Mulikat Adedoyin, a trader, said: ``We are suffering. The government should be concerned about the plight of people that they are governing.'The transport fare from Ikorodu to Mile 12 is now N300. How can they expect us to keep paying such an exorbitant fare'''Monday Amos, a commercial motorcyclist, said: ``I am really enjoying this flood because I have made over N4, 500 in just one hour from three trips between Ikorodu and Mile12.''The flood, which has become an annual event, is as a result of the release of water from the Oyan Dam in Ogun State, which is being managed by the Ogun/Osun River Basin Development Authority, and the heavy rainfall experienced in the area. The water usually results in flooding along the Isheri plains in Ogun State, as well as Ajegunle, Agiliti and Owode Onirin in neighbouring Lagos State.
