Some people would not like this title because of our renewed freak with patriotism. But I presume that the child, who defiantly goes to the gathering of the clan to submit what his father has stolen, certainly knows something about the consuming nature of ancestral curse and the tenacious stigma of a dishonest appellation.Talking about a one-time homogeneous community which drifted when it began to feel it was harmful and unpatriotic to expose the few witches and wizards in their midst to the knowledge of strangers. They feared it would dampen their towering image and affect the beneficial economic relationship when the other communities become scared. And so they remained silent until the witches and wizards multiplied in numbers, making it extremely difficult to survive in that community except one became just like them. Most certainly too, it would be ridiculous to expect the witches and wizards, who were now in control of the affairs of the community to work in line with the proper way of doing things as in other communities. For this reason, the community became more notorious for its abnormalities and the proficiency in the act of doing wierd things was greeted with adequate rewards which grew quickly to assume the only asset of becoming prominent. In the face of these, the curiosity of strangers inadvertently transferred from being dumbfounded to self-restraint, or if you like abstinence. It could only amount to that, as they pondered on the essence of such a determined and corporate progress towards self-extermination.The necessity of the other communities to warn their citizens about this particular people that have become notorious for their strange ways was now well established; for the duckling has to be told of what might become its fate, if it prefers hibernating with chicks in a hawk infested environment. Moreover, if one mother prefers silence as a method of admonishing her child, who is constantly stealing from her, she cannot also prescribe the act of silence for other people, when her child extends his thieving skills beyond the comfort zone of such a mother.Again, while it may seem like an act of patriotism to quickly and always wipe the vomit off the ground before the visitors come in, others have also argued it does not necessarily stop the sick from vomiting more, and sometimes right in front of the visitors. When our patriotic brothers and sisters are flaunting the ability to accommodate all the abnormalities with equanimity as a part of our natural endowment - a testimony of a people that are imbued with the gift of self-reinvention (The Nija Spirit) they ought to be pardoned. After all, they have learnt from the wisdom of the parent, who in addition to teaching her children the act of stealing for survival, also goes further to teach them the skill of denial and the ability to absolve all manner of ridicule without being ruffled .For a society, whose ruling class is made up of people, who boldly reel out their long and continuing years of political 'competence' resulting in failed policies, growing unemployment, dilapidated infrastructure, emboldened corruption and a widening alienation between the ruled and the rulers, to me is simply muffling to find such persons bestriding our sensibilities as curators of our corporate existence. This makes for why people refer to politics as a 'dirty game' because of the admixture and investiture of so many abnormalities from the field of very limited brain-width and the vexatious pretense of triumphing in failure. Sometimes, you find a state governor performing so well to the admiration of the ordinary people, and yet his political party goes about accusing and plotting his impeachment for not 'Carrying them along' with all manner of casuistry. For some, who have unceremoniously earned the appellation of Leaders, you wonder about the mess they have led us into, and what manner of self-worth they strut about in a society they have plundered as a mark of their industry, or if you like, political industry. It is everything like the essence of a boasting father's abiding moral sanctity, when his children are aware of his sexual harassment of their house-maid.It may be right to assume that the mysterious thread that binds Nigeria together would never snap. After all, it has survived the torrent of a civil war and a lot of other burgeoning oddities. However, it does not erase my fear of the cries of all the people, who are strangulated in abject deprivation. For now, we can only pray that they do not find another instrument of self- expression beyond their cries. It is very convenient that they should remain as vestal-virgins to the people plundering their common wealth with impunity, railroading their future towards anarchy and squeezing their existence along to the gloomy path of extinction. We all know that the Tunisia, Egypt and most recently, Libya's method of the people's self-expression comes with a lot of damages.Ogbeide'Ihama can be reached via mustardaffairs@yahoo.com
