Group asks Obaseki to stop harassing, intimidating ex- CPS

Published by The Nation on Sat, 23 May 2020

Bisi Olaniyi, Southsouth Bureau ChiefThe Moses Oisakede Leadership Foundation has asked the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, to stop harassing and intimidating with the police and other security agencies, his former Chief Press Secretary (CPS), John Mayaki. It described as barbaric and condemnable, the police invasion of the Benin residence of Mayaki, which he earlier sold to a former Edo Commissioner for Education in the defunct Bendel State, Dr. Nosa Omoregie. The foundation, through its Executive Secretary, Kennedy Ifeh, yesterday in Benin, also declared that Wednesdays invasion of the house, located onAiguokian Street, off Sapele Road, Oghoghobi in the Edo State capitalwas least expected and uncalled for.Obaseki and his lawyer, in January this year, wrote petitions against Mayaki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who hails from Igarra in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, alleging defamation. The foundation said: We do not understand what concerns the Nigeria police with a case of defamation. The case of defamation is a civil matter and cannot be criminalised. We can state without any fear that the addendum by the police on conduct likely to cause breach of the peace is an invention intended for an evil agenda, especially to create a basis for the arrest of John Mayaki by the police, Edo State Command, as has been designed by their paymaster. Most Nigerians are aware that Mayaki is speaking truth to power in the current misdemeanour of Obaseki and his government. Polices letter of invitation is suspect, as it lacks details to guide Mayaki and his lawyers, on the real reasons for the invitation.Obasekis Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, through the telephone, stated that it was within the purview of the police to act on his boss petition. When Osagie was asked why Edo governor refused to go to court to sue Mayaki for defamation, rather than harassing him with policemen in Benin and his Igarra hometown, the media aide was no longer forthcoming.
