Buhari mourns as ex-NNPC GMD Baru dies at 60

By Bolaji Ogundele, AbujaPresident Muhammadu Buhari has sent condolences to the family, friends and associates of the immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Baru.Baru died on Friday night in Abuja following a brief illness.Buharialso commiserated with the Government of Bauchi State as well as the Management and staff of the NNPC over Barus death.The president,through a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, recalled Baurs immense contributions to the development of the nations oil and gas industry, especially how he reorganized the NNPC while in the saddle as GMD.The NNPC reorganization,he said,ensuredstability in the oil sector in Nigeria, with a more guaranteed supply and predictable price regime that weakened unscrupulous parallel marketers, especially during festive seasons.READ ALSO:Baru contributed to stability in oil sector, says BuhariThe President prayed that the almighty God will receive the soul of the departed, grant eternal rest, and comfort all who mourn him.Barus successor, Mallam Mele Kyari expressed shock over the sudden death of the man he described as my brother, my friend and my mentor.He also described the deceased asa consummate mechanical engineer and a man of exemplary character and disposition.Baru, 60, was at the helm of the Corporation from July 4th 2016 to July 7th 2019 died after a brief illness in an Abuja hospital.He wasborn in July 1959 in Misau,Bauchi State and attended Federal Government College,Josfor his secondary education.He later proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University,Zaria from where he graduated in1978 with a bachelor of engineering degree.He also attended University of Sussex in the United Kingdom,getting a doctorate inComputer Aided Engineering.He was the 18th GMD of NNPC.
