MORE students have continued to throng the Union Bank Sports Complex for the Greensprings School sports academy, which took off a fortnight ago.The academy will afford students the opportunity to take active part in six sports ' tennis, table tennis, football, athletics, swimming and basketball. They will also have the opportunity to be tutored by qualified coaches.According to the Director of Greensprings, Lai Koiki, the academy became necessary to inspire in the students the spirit of participation and competition. And having realised the importance of extra-curricular activities like sports, she added, the school decided to start an academy where students would be exposed to regular training in their chosen sports.'We realised that apart from being healthy, the students want to engage in sports,' she said. 'But for them to learn the rudiments of each of these sports, we decided to start a sports academy where qualified coaches would tutor them. We will be starting with sports like basketball, athletics, swimming, football and table tennis, and for these we will engage best hands in the sports.'We also noticed that sports imparts some traits in these students and some of these virtues is the spirit of competition and participation, which is key in life. These positive attitudes will be enhanced in the students when they engage in sports.'To impart in its students the values of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Nigeria Olympic Committee recently trained some members of staff of the school, and this is what the Director of Studies, Dolapo Fatoki, believes would help the teachers to pass the knowledge onto the students.Fatoki told The Guardian that the values of IOC were in tandem with the school's vision, which she said would be emphasised once again. For the exchange programme, Greensprings is expected to choose a British school to execute the initiative.
