VC faults N'Assembly on post-JAMB test

Published by Guardian on Fri, 28 Oct 2011

THE Vice Chancellor of the Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State, Prof. Isaac Adebayo Adeyemi, has said there is no going back on the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test conducted by universities as a pre-requisite to admitting fresh students. He flayed the decision of the National Assembly to scrap the test, saying the legislators should avoid taking decisions without involving the stakeholders concerned with the issue.Adeyemi, who spoke at a World Press Conference for the third convocation ceremony of the institution slated for Saturday, November 5, 2011, in Ota, Ogun State, noted that the post-UTME is part of efforts at imbibing in the candidates university culture, which is more or less a sort of interaction with them to know about their chosen institutions.'The post-JAMB is to further determine their performance in order to admit the best students. There are some students that had high scores in JAMB but failed the university test. So, the question is how did they achieve the high scores''Polytechnics, universities and colleges of education should be allowed to put in place modalities in admitting their best students. Let us work out the modalities for the best to come out', he stated. The vice chancellor implored members of the National Assembly to allow universities in the country continue the examination exercise. While speaking on the progress of the school so far, he noted that there has been a steady increase in the number of senior academic staff either on contract or sabbatical, while some of the regular staff have successfully completed their Doctorate programmes.Adeyemi said: 'In the year under review, the university team came first in the 2011 Nigeria universities/polytechnics computer programming contest held at the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, in October 3 to 7. This is the second time in succession for our resounding victory.'I am very proud to say that one of our graduates has towed the path of an entrepreneur by pursuing training in fashion-designing, after obtaining her first-class in Biochemistry. This has propelled us to taking steps towards further strengthening our entrepreneurial programmes to equip these future leaders as prospective employers'.
