Group urges government to plan for power sector

Published by Punch on Sun, 30 Oct 2011

A civil group, Project Light Up Nigeria has urged political office holders in Nigeria to draw up plans for the power sector at the various levels of governance. The group, in a statement on Tuesday, said it had written to the Peoples Democratic Party, Action Congress of Nigeria and the Congress for Progressive Change.According to it, the governorship aspirant for the December 3, 2011 governorship election in Kogi State, in line with the groups mission, have made available their four-year electricity power plans. This, it noted, had been uploaded against their profiles on Kogi State page on the groups website, www.projectlightupnigeria.com.It explained that, with such development, the Kogi Sate electorate and Nigerians can view before voting in the forthcoming governorship election, especially when candidates of the ACN and CPC are already leveraging on the platform. The National Co-ordinator, Project Light Up Nigeria, Mr. Frank Ukpabi, in Lagos on Tuesday, said the group was committed to seeing that the days of candidates contesting and winning elections in Nigeria without any plan is over, as that is part of the major reason why Nigeria has failed to become a fast developing country since 1960, despite our huge mineral, capital and human resources.Project Light Up Nigeria, he noted, was conscious about Nigerians waking up to the fact that people must only be voted for when they have ready plans for the electorate, especially in the area of power supply. Also, the group urged other politicians in other states where elections would soon take place like Adamawa, Bayelsa, Sokoto, Cross River, and Edo, to start working on their four-year electricity power plans.Ukpabi said the group believed that people who failed to plan had planned to fail, adding that Project Light Up Nigeria would not be part of a failed Nigeria, hence this initiative.
