Abuja airport renovation: FG to relocate domestic airlines

Published by Punch on Sun, 30 Oct 2011

The Federal Government has said it will in a couple of weeks relocate domestic airlines to the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to enable the government to renovate and upgrade the domestic terminal. This is contained in a notice advertised in some national dailies on Wednesday by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria. The notice reads in part, "The current domestic terminal in Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja is too poor a facility to use for passenger operations. Yet, we have sufficient space to utilise the current international terminal for domestic passenger operations as well."As a result, we are currently preparing to transfer the domestic operations completely from the present domestic terminal into wings B and D of the international terminal. Arik Air and Air Nigeria, which are the two biggest domestic carriers, will operate out of wing D while all other schedule domestic carriers will operate out of wing B." FAAN said passengers should also expect some discomfort at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, as the agency had commenced the replacement of baggage belts and central air-conditioning system. This, it said, would lead to the diversion of passengers from their normal arrival route, adding that temporary terminal facility in the form of large canopies would be used. According to FAAN, the plan is the first phase of a special airport renovation and upgrade project. It added that the first phase would be executed at 11 airports across the country. The notice listed the airports as MMA (international wing); MMA (General Aviation Terminal); Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport; Port Harcourt International Airport; Kaduna airport; Margaret Ekpo International Airport Calabar; Benin airport; Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu; Sam Mbakwe Airport Owerri; Yola airport; and Yakubu Gowon Airport, Jos.
