Heartland go on strike

Published by Punch on Sun, 30 Oct 2011

Nigeria Premier League club Heartland are on strike to demand for their signing-on fees as well as the cash gift promised them by the government for clinching the Federation Cup.Club spokesman Cajetan Nkwoapara told MTNFootball.com that the players have stayed away from training since Wednesday to press home their point."The players stopped training since Wednesday," confirmed Nkwopara. The spokesman further disclosed that Heartland general manager Fan Ndubuoke has made a passionate appeal to the team to resume training."The general manager has appealed to the players to return to work because everything is now being done to ensure they are paid," said Nkwopara."We have two straight home games against Rangers and Enyimba beginning on Wednesday and so the players have to exercise some patience and understanding in this respect."Last week, Heartland strenuously denied a report by MTNFootball.com of unrest at The Naze Millionaires, which forced the club to line up a second-rate team in the NPL tie away at 3SC in Ibadan.Heartland have lost out on a top-three finish in the league, but made history when they recently won the 2011 Federation Cup at the expense of regional rivals Enyimba. It was their first major conquest in 18 years and the Imo State government promised each member of the squad a million naira as reward. The cash has yet to be paid.
