Fashola calls for new revenue formula

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola has called for a review of the current revenue allocation formula to ensure that more funds are channelled to the states and local councils.While presiding over the swearing-in of the newly elected chairmen of 20 Local Government Councils and 37 Local Council Development Areas in Lagos, on Saturday, Fashola urged Nigerians to support the call for a new revenue formula that would bring development closer to the people. He said the current revenue allocation formula that gives 52 per cent to the Federal Government, which was farther from the people, and 26 per cent and 20 per cent to states and local governments respectively, was hindering development in the states and local government areas.The governor told the chairmen that they did not win by their personal capabilities alone, but due to the trust of Lagosians and that the state government would not tolerate any act of indolence on their part.He said, "While we encourage you to be firm in the discharge of your duties, we equally expect you to show compassion by bringing a human face to bear in your dealings with our people."Fashola also told the chairmen to exceed the target of Millennium Development Goals in grassroot development.He said the expectation of residents of the state was the development of their areas, adding that there should be no excuse on development.Fashola said, "You asked for this, we expect you to wake up and work harder because we will not condone laziness and insolence."Dignitaries at the ceremony included the Deputy Governor of Lagos state, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, past governor of the state, Bola Tinubu, former deputy governor of the state, Abiodun Ogunleye, wife of former governor of the state, Mrs. Abimbola Jakande, Senator Gbenga Ashafa and Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
